The story behind the place

The ruins at Zvartnots invite you to read a building from what remains. Columns, arches and low foundations reveal part of a remarkable seventh-century cathedral. The church later collapsed, probably during an earthquake, and its surviving elements have been studied and conserved. Along with the monuments of nearby Echmiadzin, Zvartnots forms a UNESCO World Heritage property. Its open, roofless arcade is a fragment of that architectural story, rather than an intact cathedral.
