The story behind the place

Amberd’s surviving towers and walls show how a fortress could use the shape of a mountain spur. The medieval stronghold stands on the slopes of Aragats, with steep ground helping to define its position. The broken masonry makes the building’s long history visible without restoring an imaginary complete castle. Nearby monuments belong to the wider site, but the fortress itself remains a distinct structure to explore.
