Altun Ha — Temple of the Masonry Altars
A stepped temple at Altun Ha connects ancient building, burial and long-distance exchange.

The story behind the place
Altun Ha was a wealthy Maya community linked to coastal trade routes. At Structure B4, known as the Temple of the Masonry Altars, archaeologists found the jade head depicting the sun deity Kinich Ahau. The National Institute of Culture and History highlights that find as one of the site’s defining discoveries. The surviving stepped monument provides the setting for the story; the small precious object itself is not enlarged into a fictional outdoor statue.
