Xunantunich — El Castillo
A tall terraced monument rises above the ancient Maya centre of Xunantunich.

The story behind the place
El Castillo is Xunantunich’s largest pyramid, across the river from San José Succotz in Belize’s Cayo District. The National Institute of Culture and History identifies the monument as Structure A6 and highlights stucco friezes on its eastern and western sides. Its stairs, terraces and surviving upper masonry make the scale of the ancient centre legible. The remains belong to a specific Maya place, not a generic lost-city scene.
