The story behind the place

St John’s Cathedral was built in Belize City from bricks brought from England in the early nineteenth century. The Belize Tourism Board also records coronations of four Miskito kings here between 1815 and 1845. Those ceremonies place the building within a wider Caribbean history of religion, diplomacy and colonial power. Its modest brick exterior gives that complicated past a very different setting from a grand stone cathedral with soaring spires.
