Illustrated landscapes

Mountain regions follow Natural Earth geography, which is in the public domain.

Desert and dryland boundaries, and the choice of forest painting, use RESOLVE Ecoregions 2017, © RESOLVE and Esri, under CC BY 4.0. These simplified ecological regions do not determine which land is shown as wooded.

Forest paintings are restricted to observed tree-cover and mangrove classes in ESA WorldCover 2021 v200, supplied through Terrascope and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2021), processed by the ESA WorldCover consortium. This map uses an approximately 5 km overview sample, not the full 10 m product or a live survey; small woods and recent changes may be absent.

Greenland and Antarctic land ice, glaciers and Antarctic ice shelves follow Natural Earth glaciated-area and ice-shelf outlines (public domain). These are approximate cartographic outlines based on older observations, not measurements of current glacier fronts or seasonal sea ice.

The paintings represent each type of landscape within its broad geographic region. Individual peaks, trees and dunes are illustrative.

Street detail

Close map views use © OpenStreetMap contributors, with standard tiles provided by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Tiles load only for the area you are viewing and use the browser’s normal HTTP cache. At deeper zoom, vector roads, buildings and water are provided by OpenFreeMap, using © OpenMapTiles and OpenStreetMap data. Vector overzoom keeps lines sharp; it does not add surveyed detail. Street detail is best-effort; the globe remains available if it cannot load. Report a map issue.

Local shoreline detail

Main Guard illustration placement uses local shoreline data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence 1.0. The adapted local shoreline data is available under that licence. Its inland crop boundary is a processing limit, not a real coastline. Bomarsund’s main-fort illustration uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; its adapted local shoreline data includes explicit inland processing cuts, which are not real coastlines. Burj Khalifa’s placement excludes its mapped lake using © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the complete adapted Burj Lake water geometry is available under that licence. Mapped construction/drain tags are retained; this is not a current hydrological survey. Petra Treasury and Angkor Wat component locations and Angkor’s known ponds and moats use © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted component and water geometry is available under that licence. El Jem, Guaita, the Registan and Tikal Temple I component locations and known water use © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted component, water and ditch geometry is available under that licence. Kuwait Towers uses a bounded actual mapped coastline with seven swimming-pool holes and two explicitly artificial inland processing boundaries; the adapted local coast, pools and source lineage is available under ODbL 1.0, © OpenStreetMap contributors. Great Zimbabwe’s Great Enclosure, the Meroe representative group and Saint Sava use OpenStreetMap named-site geometry and two complete mapped fountains; adapted component and water data is available under ODbL 1.0, © OpenStreetMap contributors. Hungarian Parliament placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted Parliament component and river corridor data retains explicitly labelled processing cuts. To Sua, Two Lovers Point, Darvaza and Copán component locations and known water use © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; adapted component, pool, stream and river data is available under that licence. Ahu Tongariki placement also uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the local Tongariki component and coastline data preserves labelled processing cuts. Sigiriya and the two Kosovo discoveries use © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted component, water and elevated-pool data is available under that licence. Lui Seng Chun and Wong Tai Sin Main Altar placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted Hong Kong component and water data is available under that licence. Aruba and Minsk illustration placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; adapted Aruba coast and water data and Red Church component data are available under that licence. Hong Kong Observatory illustration placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted building and pool data is available under that licence. Additional Curaçao, Bermuda, Faroe Islands and Cayman Islands illustration placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted community source geometry is available under that licence. Taiwan’s Fort San Domingo placement uses the adapted land and tidal-water geometry under the same licence. Further Bermuda lighthouse placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted community source geometry is available under that licence. Jersey and Guernsey illustration placement uses the Jersey coastline and water geometry and Guernsey coastline and water geometry under the same licence. Further Puerto Rico illustration placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the adapted Puerto Rico community source geometry is available under that licence. Additional placement uses the Isle of Man coastline and water geometry and bounded St Thomas coastline and water geometry under the same licence. St Thomas analytical boundary edges are research-domain limits, not coastline; its mapped fountain basin extent is unresolved. Additional illustration placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0: Uummannaq source geometry, Ilulissat source geometry, Klaksvík source geometry, Rarotonga coastline and pool geometry, and Guam Museum source context. The first three are bounded research domains; their analytical closing edges are not coastline. Guam tidalflat and open river records retain their original roles; open river widths are unresolved. Further Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Niue illustration placement uses © OpenStreetMap contributors under ODbL 1.0; the three landmark source contexts, Machu Picchu water geometry and Île aux Marins coastline geometry are available under that licence. Open streams retain unknown widths and are not converted into invented water polygons. Other local illustration support uses Natural Earth.

The main Wallis / Île Uvea boundary of WLF uses © OpenStreetMap contributors, under ODbL 1.0. The complete adapted Wallis coastline dataset is available under that licence. The combined map geometry includes this ODbL component; WLF’s Futuna component and all other territory boundaries retain their Natural Earth source. This main-island coastline is not a cadastral or tidal survey and does not add lagoon, reef, satellite-island or crater-lake boundaries. It does not change NASA terrain imagery.

Pyrenees geographic references

Regional geography uses IGN’s geological map (CC BY 4.0) and the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Cap de Creus park guide. They inform an approximate illustrated range, rather than a surveyed mountain or shoreline boundary.

Voltzberg illustration

Adapted using Jan Willem Broekema’s photograph, 15 July 2008. The drawing simplifies rock texture and forest, omits the foreground plateau and people, and is offered under CC BY-SA 2.0. The source photographer does not endorse USURPR. The approximate named-hill reference comes from the Geographic Names Database, U.S. Board on Geographic Names/NGA, without agency endorsement.

Wadi Al-Hitan and Caana illustrations

Wadi Al-Hitan’s illustration is adapted from Tom Horton / Further to Fly’s 2008 photograph, under CC BY-SA 2.0. Rock textures and fossil-fragment shapes and spacing are interpreted; no exact skeleton reconstruction is asserted.

Caana’s illustration is adapted using Evan Yares’s 2007 photograph, under CC BY-SA 3.0. Perspective, terraces, stone texture and vegetation are simplified. Both illustrations are offered under their respective licences; neither photographer endorses USURPR. These credits accompany downloaded postcards.

World discovery illustrations

These illustrated studies adapt photographs, simplifying and rearranging textures, vegetation and small architectural details. They are not measured reconstructions or current-condition surveys. The Trinidad study combines surviving church walls and a carved doorway; the Pitch Lake study depicts a representative patch of wet asphalt.

Talietumu’s source record also carries contradictory public-domain text; its explicit CC BY-SA 2.5 declaration is retained here without a public-domain claim. Official Andorra, Rwanda and Wallis tourism photographs informed feature form; their photographers and general reuse licences are not stated, and those photographs are not embedded in the game. The photographers do not endorse USURPR. These credits accompany downloaded postcards. The illustration licence applies to the discovery artwork; other postcard content retains its own rights. See the discovery illustration provenance for reference dates and interpretation details.
