# USURPR worldwide discovery illustrations

These original painted miniatures were generated for USURPR with OpenAI's image-generation tool, using the existing USURPR geographic illustrations as style references. Technical exports preserve transparency. They are artistic interpretations, with scale exaggerated for map readability; they are not measured reconstructions, surveys or navigation aids.

## Rani-ki-Vav, India

Runtime illustration: `rani-ki-vav-768.webp`; smaller export: `rani-ki-vav-320.webp`.

The composition depicts the preserved stepwell as a dry archaeological monument. Its location and story use the [UNESCO World Heritage Centre record](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/922/). That source supports the subject's factual description, rather than certifying every artistic detail. The source image, generation prompt, reference files, export history and integrity records are retained in the versioned release artwork archive. An earlier candidate with a blue pool was superseded and is not used in the game.

Discovery artwork is separate from the existing learning cards and passport stamps. Opening an illustration grants no territorial ownership or proof of real-world travel.

## Landmark expansion, October 2026

The new [landmark collection's sources and interpretation notes](./LANDMARK_EXPANSION_PROVENANCE.md) accompany the additional famous discoveries. Each is a separate generated painting with its own retained master and exact prompt. Runtime images preserve the complete canvas and transparency in 768px and 320px WebP tiers; technical tiers are not distinct discoveries.

## Falaj Daris and Aldabra

The `world-pack-1` illustrations depict a Falaj Daris irrigation-channel/cultivation patch in Oman and a local Aldabra habitat with giant tortoises, coral limestone and a mangrove/marine edge. Each is an interpretive local miniature rather than a measured plan of the entire property. Sources: [Aflaj Irrigation Systems of Oman](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1207/) and [Aldabra Atoll](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/185/), UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Source masters, generation prompts, references and export hashes are retained in the release's world-art-pack-1 manifest. An attempted Pont du Gard illustration was rejected and is not used.

Falaj Daris is displayed near its surface outlet, using the Omani nomination's local UTM point with an explicitly provisional datum interpretation and a community-map crosscheck. Aldabra's terrestrial miniature is anchored on eastern Grande Terre at the Cinq Cases locality 19F from [Braithwaite's published field study](https://eprints.gla.ac.uk/213082/1/213082.pdf), crosschecked against the [Seychelles Islands Foundation habitat map](https://www.sif.sc/sites/default/files/downloads/AldabraManagementPlan.pdf). The central lagoon's broad UNESCO property point is retained separately as research evidence. The illustrated water/mangrove edge represents the wider habitat mosaic; it does not assert all depicted details occupy one surveyed patch.

## Laxey, Himeji, Djenné, Liberty Island, Valparaíso and Tongariro

These six miniatures use local subject positions, recorded separately from broad heritage-property reference coordinates. Geographic references include [Manx National Heritage's Laxey Wheel](https://manxnationalheritage.im/our-sites/laxey-wheel/), the [Himeji Castle Management Office](https://www.himejicastle.jp/en/), [AKDN's Djenné conservation programme](https://the.akdn/en/where-we-work/west-africa/mali), the [US National Park Service's Statue of Liberty](https://www.nps.gov/stli/index.htm), Chile's [Ascensor Concepción monument record](https://www.monumentos.gob.cl/monumentos/monumentos-historicos/ascensor-concepcion), and [GeoNet's Ngāuruhoe record](https://www.geonet.org.nz/about/volcano/ngauruhoe).

The Djenné illustration depicts the Great Mosque within the wider earthen townscape discussed by the discovery. The Tongariro illustration depicts Ngāuruhoe, rather than the whole park. The Valparaíso miniature uses a historic carriage reference and interprets adjacent buildings. Himeji's connected roofs and Laxey's linkage are compressed for miniature readability. Liberty's first candidate was rejected for invented pedestal ornament; the displayed second version corrects it to restrained masonry. Fort Wood and all compact ground bases remain artistic interpretations. These are original generated game illustrations; reference photographs are evidence, not runtime artwork or claims of architectural survey accuracy.

## World packs three and four

Twelve additional original illustrations are integrated for interface review, with native masters, prompts, primary feature references and local-anchor evidence in the corresponding world-art-pack-3.json and world-art-pack-4.json release manifests. All remain pending final map/mobile/editorial acceptance. Their compact ground settings and perspective are illustrative, not surveyed plans.

## Four further discovery miniatures

The Main Guard and Garrison Clock Tower in Barbados use the [state-party nomination photograph](https://whc.unesco.org/uploads/nominations/1376.pdf) and [official tourism attraction point](https://www.visitbarbados.org/discover/unesco-world-heritage-site-old). The pediment's heraldic arrangement is simplified for the illustration.

The Joggins miniature interprets tilted sedimentary beds at Coal Mine Point, using [Dalhousie field research](https://cdn.dal.ca/content/dam/dalhousie/pdf/faculty/science/earth-environmental-sciences/basinReservoirLab/ES_2014_BSc_Wong_Carlos_provisional.pdf), including a surveyed cliff-face target from 2013. It does not reproduce a measured section or assert unchanged present erosion.

The Grand Tsingy miniature interprets the limestone habitat shown by [Madagascar's tourism authority](https://madagascar-tourisme.com/en/discover/the-northwest/bemaraha/). A [mapped local circuit viewpoint](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/5628860321) locates this part of Bemaraha; individual depicted pinnacles are not surveyed rock identities.

Betty's Hope depicts the mill towers and dismantled sails in historical photographs from [23 November 2004](https://www.windmillworld.com/world/antigua.htm) and [21 May 2009](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bettyshope.JPG). It does not report the machinery's present condition. The [north-mill footprint](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/996920559) supplies its local display point.

These four candidates are integrated for map and mobile review. Their original masters, later corrections, prompts and reference hashes remain in the release archive. The Budj Bim channel candidate remains withheld pending its coordinate correction.

## Yasawi Mausoleum

The third Yasawi candidate follows the [Azret Sultan custodian photograph](https://azretsultan.kz/rus/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/775.jpg) and [monument location](https://azretsultan.kz/rus/mavzolej-hodzha-ahmeda-yasavi/). Its turquoise dome and unfinished brick portal remain recognisable; the drum tilework is deliberately abstracted into small geometric motifs, not a transcription of religious inscriptions. This source-reviewed candidate is awaiting actual map, panel and mobile review. Earlier versions remain archived.

## Local shoreline support

Main Guard illustration placement uses © [OpenStreetMap contributors](https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright), under [ODbL 1.0](https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/). The [adapted local shoreline data](/data/bridgetown-ground.json) is offered under that licence. Four original coastline ways are retained; the inland closing segment is an artificial crop boundary, not a real shoreline. This finer support does not establish visual or geographic acceptance of the illustration. Other local support uses public-domain Natural Earth.

## Hwahongmun, Timgad and Tiwanaku

Hwahongmun follows the [Suwon Cultural Foundation’s named Northern Watergate](https://www.visitsuwon.or.kr/base/board/read?boardManagementNo=2&boardNo=43), retaining seven arches, the pavilion and intentional freshwater stream. [Timgad](https://ont.dz/ar/destination/timgad-987515409/) depicts Trajan’s three-opening arch, with stone ornament and immediate paving interpreted. The [Tiwanaku custodian](https://tiwanaku.gob.bo/sitio-arqueologico/) identifies the monolithic Gate of the Sun; its miniature simplifies the carved frieze and does not reproduce or interpret individual religious motifs.

Local display points use the named OpenStreetMap features [Hwahongmun](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/569078225), [Trajan’s Arch](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/5434161242) and [Puerta del Sol](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/877180132). These are secondary local references, with final map review pending. The separate Buada and Fort Shirley source candidates remain withheld while their placement questions are resolved.

## Voltzberg

The illustration adapts [Jan Willem Broekema’s Volzberg photograph, 15 July 2008](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trek_to_Volzberg_Mountain_(12793372443).jpg), under [CC BY-SA 2.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/). It simplifies rock/forest detail and omits foreground plateau and people. The adapted discovery illustration is offered under the same licence; source credits are also retained in postcard PNGs. No photographer endorsement is implied.

Its approximate named-hill reference is4.677391,-56.178697 from the [Geographic Names Database/BGN/NGA](https://geonames.nga.mil/geonames/GNSHome/index.html), UFI-915433, approved Volks Berg/variant Voltz Berg. This replaces an unsourced point606m west; it does not assert a surveyed summit, foot or camera location. NGA does not endorse the game.

## World pack 7 — provisional interface candidates

Six new paintings retain original source masters, prompts, reference order, hashes and source-specific interpretation limits in `docs/major-release/world-art-pack-7.json`. These are interpreted geographic miniatures; local display anchors are finding references, not survey guarantees. Desktop/mobile map, source-panel and printed/export appearance review remains required.

Other pack7 official photographs are factual reference inputs; no permission to redistribute those photographs is asserted, and their files are not served as runtime artwork. See the full manifest for source-specific rights notes.

## World pack 8 — provisional interface candidates

Six interpreted miniatures retain source masters, prompts, reference order and hashes in `docs/major-release/world-art-pack-8.json`. Source photographs establish subject form; these drawings compress and interpret surface details. They are not measured reconstructions or current-condition surveys. Local display anchors are finding references. Interface, shoreline, overlap and export review remains required.

- **san-marino-public-palace**: Palazzo Pubblico’s civic façade and clock tower, San Marino. Local reference 43.93675, 12.44628; [point source](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/59305139). ## World pack 9 — provisional interface candidates

Six source-backed miniatures; exact native prompts, reference order and hashes remain in `docs/major-release/world-art-pack-9.json`. They compress fine detail and perspective rather than reconstructing measured plans. Local points are finding references, with explicitly primary or secondary provenance; uncertainty allowances are not survey accuracy. Interface/coastline/overlap acceptance remains pending.

Local display reference 26.23341, 50.5202; [point source](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/89370342). Actual named fort footprint representative point W89370342. Fresh named Bahrain Fort polygon node mean26.23340769,50.52019846. Broad UNESCO tell reference26.2344417,50.5183306 about200mNW is preserved as reference only. Primary Diego Delso exterior photo controls fort identity/form, not ancient harbour or offshore sea tower. 90m review allowance, not surveyed accuracy. Terrestrial pale masonry fort/tell and small dry ditch/apron. Near northern coast but no painted sea, harbour or pearling structures. Higher viewpoint reveals interpreted wall-top surfaces; extra low wall returns/rubble/vegetation and individual openings are compressed, not the entire measured fort plan or a reconstruction of buried Dilmun layers. Fort display anchor is about200mSE of canonical tell reference; primary numerical fort-corner confirmation not claimed. Official Guyana Tourism and Ian Mackenzie field photo confirm actual timber cathedral identity, not Kaieteur Falls or Brickdam Cathedral. 45m review allowance, not surveyed accuracy. Small inland urban grass/steps apron around timber cathedral, no rainforest waterfall, ocean or full city panorama. Tiny window divisions, flower-window petals, finial, buttress/side bay widths and landscaping are regularised; not exact construction survey or certified present maintenance state. No unsupported tallest/world-record label.2007 photo is historical form evidence. - **mulafossur**: Múlafossur’s freshwater plunge over a grassy basalt cliff into the Atlantic. Local display reference 62.1075049, -7.4357777; [point source](https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/5376090599). Named waterfall node at local cliff/watercourse, N5376090599. Fresh named waterway=waterfall node, official Gásadalur/Vágar identity and briantoronto primary photograph crosscheck cliff-outlet setting. Photographer camera62.106691,-7.436964 about110mSW is explicitly NOT target. Point represents waterfall vicinity/lip, not surveyed cliff line or land-only ground pad. 45m review allowance, not surveyed accuracy. Intentional land/water split: grassy basalt cliff behind, freshwater falling over coastal lip into small Atlantic pool/foam foreground. Water and cliff face must not be forced onto land or moved to inland island centre. Cliff curvature/low cave/ledge dimensions and inland stream length are compacted; no survey of exact cliff edge/sea outline. Source point is waterfall lip/vicinity, camera coordinate is not target. Recommended pixel pivot approximately aligns painted lip, not bottom sea apron; root must verify coastline orientation and actual map water/terrain handling. - **nyungwe**: An illustrated main span of Nyungwe’s canopy walkway between lattice supports above montane forest. Local display reference -2.475625, 29.195492; [point source](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/220917835). Derived midpoint of mapped long span between pylon nodes2299890332 and2299890270 on W220917835. Pylon positions(-2.4759955,29.1956573) and(-2.4752546,29.1953262); midpoint rounded, not a surveyed tower footing. Primary Visit Rwanda actual aerial confirms main bridge between lattice towers above forest. Canonical UNESCO forest reference-2.5553,29.2473333 is~10kmSE and not used. 70m review allowance, not surveyed accuracy. Intentional narrow aerial walkway above inland montane rainforest ravine; ground foliage beneath both sides, no river/ocean canyon or Volcanoes National Park gorillas. Forest species/individual tree positions, exposed organic base rocks and exact tower/deck lengths are interpreted; not engineering-scale model or complete multi-span walkway. Display point is secondary-derived midpoint between two mapped pylons, about10kmNW of broad park reference. Alex Niragira source date2017 claim/2016EXIF discrepancy retained, not resolved. Official aerial photographer/reuse rights not stated. - **talietumu**: A restored low basalt platform and paved stone setting at Talietumu within Kolonui, an illustrated section. Local display reference -13.3368394, -176.208976; [point source](https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/346277921). Named Talietumu archaeological-site/residence vicinity, not exact individual restored wall GPS. Mapped polygon about150x130m, named Talietumu with alt-name Kolo Nui: community naming conflates residence and larger ensemble. Primary territorial/tourism sources distinguish residence within Kolonui;2004 field and official site photos show low restored basalt paving/retaining platform. Local platform corners not independently georeferenced, so100m vicinity review allowance retained and final component-anchor confirmation pending. 100m review allowance, not surveyed accuracy. Inland low dark basalt stone residence/platform with small green lawn/palms; no lake, coast, recreated chiefly house or imagined ceremony. Illustrates a source-backed visible section, not whole Kolonui footprint. Rounded platform outline, course counts/lichen and approach stones are painterly compressed, not exact complete residence/fort plan. Official source documents restored fabric; not untouched ancient condition. Named OSM polygon conflates Talietumu/KoloNui and covers~150x130m; exact illustrated platform corners not independently georeferenced. Photographer record contains contradictory PD text plus CC BY-SA2.5; declared2.5 retained, no public-domain/independent clearance claim. Adapted from [Tauʻolunga’s photograph](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Talietumu.jpg); illustration offered under [CC BY-SA 2.5](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/).

Sant Joan uses the official Andorra apse view to interpret the building form, while Lmbuga’s licensed reverse photograph corroborates stonework/tower. Nyungwe uses the official Visit Rwanda aerial to interpret support geometry and Niragira’s licensed photograph for the span/forest; the latter record’s declared2017 date conflicts with2016 EXIF, so no exact capture-date claim is made. Talietumu uses official site photographs for residence context and Tauʻolunga’s licensed field view for the restored stone setting. Official photographs have no established general reuse licence or named photographer; none is embedded as runtime art. Talietumu’s record contains contradictory public-domain text alongside an explicit CC BY-SA2.5 declaration; use the declared CC route with attribution, without asserting public domain or independent rights clearance. Exact platform corners are unconfirmed; the named-site reference is labelled a vicinity, not ancient stone GPS. Photographers do not endorse USURPR; illustration licences apply to discovery art, not portraits/other postcard content.
