The story behind the place

The western Barzan Tower was built between 1910 and 1916 in Umm Salal Mohammed. Qatar Museums describes three levels and a distinctive T-shaped design, separate from the later rectangular eastern tower. The towers are more plausibly linked with watching surrounding wells and farmland than with ships far offshore. Their 2014 restoration forms part of the place’s current appearance. This history connects a defensive lookout with the everyday value of land and water.
