The story behind the place

I. M. Pei designed the Museum of Islamic Art by reworking geometric ideas from Islamic architecture. The main building rises through stepped volumes around a high central atrium, with a separate education wing linked across a courtyard. Its cream limestone changes with the day’s light and shade. The museum’s own architecture account connects exterior massing with the patterned dome and light inside. The building therefore offers an architectural introduction to the craftsmanship and traditions represented in its collections.
