The story behind the place

The National Museum of Qatar opened in 2019. Jean Nouvel’s design takes inspiration from desert-rose mineral formations, using intersecting discs and shaded recesses to shape its exterior. Qatar Museums explains that these projecting forms also reduce direct sunlight on much of the building, supporting its environmental design. Architecture and the museum’s subject meet here: a formation associated with the country’s landscape becomes a way to introduce its history and culture.
