The story behind the place

Katara Cultural Village brings cultural institutions and public spaces together in Doha. Beside its mosque stand the recognisable pigeon towers: rounded earthen-coloured forms pierced by many small holes and projecting perches. Their shapes make a familiar bird shelter conspicuous within a contemporary cultural setting. Looking closely changes the reading of the architecture: the holes are not defensive loopholes, and the wooden sticks serve birds rather than supporting a roof.
