The story behind the place

Nukai Peniamina travelled to Samoa and trained there before returning to Niue in 1846. Tāoga Niue records his place in the island’s Christian history, while Niue Tourism’s island guide identifies his grave north of Alofi. The memorial has a low tiered stone surround, two rough standing stones and a dark round-topped headstone. It is a quiet place to consider how ideas and people moved between Pacific islands, and how Niuean communities remember those journeys.
