The story behind the place

Maguga Dam is part of the joint water infrastructure managed by the Komati Basin Water Authority. The spillway is a distinctive piece of that engineering: its reinforced-concrete labyrinth leads into a concrete-lined chute, with water continuing toward the Komati River. The main dam is a rockfill embankment with a clay core. Looking at the spillway reveals how a reservoir needs carefully designed routes for excess water as well as a wall to retain it.
