The story behind the place

The ruins at Ujarrás preserve the remains of a colonial church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Costa Rica’s tourism authority includes the site among the historic places of the Orosi Valley. The roof has gone, leaving a tall front wall, arched openings and lower masonry that still suggests the former spaces. Plants now grow in some of the joints. Look through the entrance rather than only at it: the open sky beyond makes the building’s changed condition clear.
