The story behind the place

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels is a major place of pilgrimage in Cartago. Costa Rica’s tourism authority describes the journeys that bring people from around the country to the church around August 2. The building’s pale decorative front contrasts with grey masonry along the side. Rounded domes, arches and small rooftop figures make a richly layered outline. Look for the large central entrance and the smaller openings around it, each framed by worked architectural detail.
