Costa Rica’s National Theatre
A triangular pediment and rooftop figures crown an elegant theatre frontage.

The story behind the place
Costa Rica’s National Theatre stands in central San José. Built in the 1890s, it became an important place for music and performance, and its conservation remains part of the theatre’s work. The exterior pairs a dark, strongly textured lower storey with a lighter upper facade. Tall arched windows, classical columns and a triangular pediment give the front a balanced rhythm. Look for the small sculpted figures on the roof, then follow the arches down towards the entrance.
