The story behind the place

The Organ Pipes take their name from the close vertical columns that resemble the pipes of a musical instrument. Unequal broken ends and angular fragments show that these forms belong to a natural rock exposure. Columnar joints developed as igneous material cooled and cracked. Here the pattern can be read at a modest scale: a bank of stone rather than an entire mountain. The repeated shapes are geological, not the remains of a built colonnade.
