The story behind the place

Boudhanath is a major centre of Himalayan Buddhism on Kathmandu’s eastern side. Its broad base and rounded white dome lead the eye upward to a square tower bearing painted eyes and a tapering golden spire. The stupa belongs to a living place of devotion, with monasteries and a community around it. Walking around its base is part of religious practice here. Its scale invites attention to both the monument and the people who continue to care for it.
