The story behind the place

Sacred Heart Cathedral stands at Teaoraereke on South Tarawa. A firsthand Catholic institutional report records a Good Samaritan profession ceremony there in 2009, showing its role as a gathering place for a living community. Its white gabled frontage is enlivened by blue trim, tall geometric windows and colourful pointed entrances. The church’s long nave gives this small island landmark a very different character from a stone cathedral with towers and spires.
