The story behind the place

Ta Dzong was built above Paro’s Rinpung Dzong as a watchtower in 1649. Its unusual circular form uses substantial stone walls around several levels. In the twentieth century, the building was adapted to a new role: the National Museum opened to the general public in 1968. The round tower now connects defensive architecture with the preservation and interpretation of Bhutanese heritage. Its stacked drums and windows still make its earlier purpose visible.
