The story behind the place

High Knoll Fort stands above Jamestown. Its older elements date to the late eighteenth century, and the Royal Engineers later enlarged the complex. The UK–St Helena Heritage Trust documented a collapsed section of the western wall in 2025, illustrating the challenges of preserving exposed masonry on the island. The surviving curved walls, firing openings and open yards can be read alongside that damage: a historic fort is also a place where fabric changes and conservation choices matter.
