Providence Island
An island in Monrovia preserves material traces and difficult memories of Liberia's formation.

The story behind the place
Providence Island, also known as Dozoa, lies in the Mesurado River. It was a trading place and an arrival point for formerly enslaved people from the United States. Surviving features include an old well and landing remains. Its history connects migration and freedom with the complex relationships between settlers and existing communities.
