Derawar Fort
Rows of rounded brick bastions rise above the dry landscape of Cholistan.

The story behind the place
Derawar Fort is one of the surviving fortified places of the Cholistan desert. Pakistan’s heritage nomination describes a wider network of forts connected with caravan, trading and pilgrimage routes. At Derawar, tall rounded bastions make the outer walls especially distinctive. Bands of patterned brickwork run around their battered sides. The surviving fort has changed through repair and occupation, so its walls tell a longer story than any single building campaign. Look for the rhythm of curved towers against the flat desert.
