The story behind the place

Saint Isaac’s Cathedral combines an enormous domed centre with monumental classical porticoes. Look from the granite columns to the sculpted pediments and the ring of columns around the dome. Small corner belfries and dark bronze figures add detail to the roofline. The building is now a museum as well as a landmark in Saint Petersburg’s cityscape.
