Golden Gate Bridge
Two orange towers carry a suspension bridge across the entrance to San Francisco Bay.

The story behind the place
The Golden Gate Bridge crosses the strait between San Francisco and Marin County. Its name comes from the Golden Gate waterway rather than its paint. Two main towers carry curving main cables, with vertical suspenders holding the roadway. When it opened in 1937, the 1,280-metre main span was the longest suspension-bridge span in the world.
