Faidherbe Bridge links Saint-Louis island with the mainland. The French Development Agency records a 506-metre metal bridge built between 1894 and 1897. Its repeating trusses make a long, low engineering silhouette, supported by piers through the river crossing.
Gorée's buildings and streets preserve evidence of European colonial occupation and the Atlantic slave trade. The contrast between spaces associated with enslaved people and merchants' houses is part of that material history. The island is also a place of remembrance, dialogue and reconciliation.
The Mamelles lighthouse was commissioned on 1 April 1864, according to the Port of Dakar. Its white tower and attached keeper buildings form a compact landmark on the headland. A glazed lantern and narrow gallery distinguish the tower from the low roofs around it.
Saint-Louis Cathedral stands in the southern part of the historic island. Its square bell towers and columned entrance give the church a restrained classical outline.
