Colombier Bay is included within Saint-Barthélemy's marine protected areas. The reserve protects environments such as seagrass beds and coral reefs, which provide habitats for many species. Considering the bay as part of this wider network makes the shallow underwater landscape as important as the beach visible from land.
Look past the tower’s smooth white sides to the little beacon at its summit. Gustavia Lighthouse stands above the harbour on Saint Barthélemy, a compact maritime landmark with an unusually broad red top. Its simple shape makes it easy to distinguish from the town’s older stone buildings.
Follow the rough masonry upwards to the louvred opening and red pyramidal roof. The detached Swedish Bell Tower is a surviving reminder of Gustavia’s Swedish-period history. Its mixture of volcanic stone and painted wood gives it a character unlike the harbour’s church spires.
