Malbork began as a thirteenth-century fortified monastery of the Teutonic Order. It expanded substantially after the Grand Master's seat moved there in 1309. Later conservation, and rebuilding after damage in the Second World War, drew on detailed records, making the castle important to the history of restoration as well as medieval architecture.

Warsaw’s Royal Castle was devastated during the Second World War. Reconstruction drew on saved plans, photographs, furnishings and architectural fragments, with major work beginning in 1971 and the castle opening to visitors in 1984. The restored entrance wing makes rebuilding itself part of the story.

Toruń’s Old Town Hall gathered trade, justice and municipal government around a courtyard. It also hosted visiting rulers, giving the Royal Hall its name. Today the Gothic brick building houses the District Museum, keeping the market square’s civic history close to its centre.

The present Gothic cathedral on Wawel was consecrated in 1364. Royal coronations and burials tied it closely to Poland’s history, while later chapels changed its outline. The golden dome of the Sigismund Chapel marks a Renaissance addition alongside the older church.
