The Dom Tower was built between 1321 and 1382 as part of Utrecht’s cathedral. A storm destroyed the connecting nave in 1674, leaving the tower separate from the church. Its square lower stages rise to an open octagonal lantern. Look for the stone tracery, clock and slender roof-top weather vane.

The Peace Palace in The Hague was built in the neo-Renaissance style. French architect Louis Cordonnier’s winning design was simplified and developed with Johan van der Steur. Its large and small towers mark the building’s principal courtrooms. This view follows the observed front facade, with pale stone trim, arcaded windows and a steep slate roof.
