history

Fort Grey

The broad fort and its squat tower have earned the nickname “Cup and Saucer”. This coastal landmark now tells stories of shipwrecks around Guernsey, linking its defensive past with the difficult waters nearby. Look for the contrast between the pale tower and the dark stone enclosure.

Hauteville House

Victor Hugo lived and worked at Hauteville House during his exile on Guernsey. His writing room overlooked St Peter Port's waterfront, and his years on the island were associated with works including Les Misérables and Les Travailleurs de la mer. The house gives literary history a specific physical setting.

The Little Chapel

Look closely at the colourful fragments covering the walls, spires and entrance. Brother Déodat began creating a miniature chapel at Les Vauxbelets, and the unusual project became one of Guernsey’s best-known sights. Small materials combine into a building full of texture and care.
