Akhaltsikhe Castle brings together a mosque, madrasa, church, museum and other buildings within a much-reconstructed historic precinct. The mosque’s current golden dome is a conspicuous part of that restored setting. The different buildings recall the town’s layered cultural history.
Alaverdi’s Cathedral of Saint George was built in the eleventh century as part of a royal monastery. Its tall central drum and restrained stone exterior dominate the precinct. The monastery also holds a long cultural connection with Kakheti’s writing and wine traditions.
Gergeti Trinity Church dates to the fourteenth century. Its stone church and separate bell tower stand high above Stepantsminda, where the compact architectural group is framed by the Caucasus. Their restrained masonry gives the mountain shoulder a distinctive human landmark.
The Margiani House Museum introduces the domestic life behind Svaneti’s famous towers. Towers formed part of residential homes and offered shelter during attacks, while cellars and pantries helped households prepare for winter. The museum preserves this family setting rather than presenting a free-standing castle.
Mtskheta's religious monuments stand near the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. The Svetitskhoveli complex includes an eleventh-century cathedral, gateways and associated buildings, with earlier churches beneath its history. Together with Jvari and Samtavro, it records several stages of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture.
