Nessebar’s old town occupies a rocky peninsula connected to the mainland. Its surviving remains and buildings reflect successive communities, including Greek and Byzantine periods. Medieval churches and later wooden houses help make the townscape distinctive: this is a place built and rebuilt over many centuries.

Boyana Church stands on the outskirts of Sofia. Its three connected buildings belong to different periods, with the eastern church followed by a thirteenth-century enlargement and a nineteenth-century addition. Wall paintings made in 1259 form a particularly important part of the ensemble's medieval artistic heritage.
