Ash-Shaliheen Mosque brings Moorish-inspired architectural details to Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei’s tourism authority identifies the building with architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil and describes its sand-toned walls, geometric screens and archways. The exterior pairs turquoise domes with simple cylindrical minarets. A series of rounded roof openings gives the lower building its own rhythm. Look for the blue roof surfaces against the warm walls, and the changing sizes of the arches below.
Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque stands in Kampong Kiarong, Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei’s tourism authority describes its golden domes, mosaics, marble accents and geometric patterns. The main frontage combines broad pointed arches with cylindrical minarets and smaller domed forms. Its colour contrasts are especially striking: pale walls, dark shaded openings, blue borders and gold above. Look for the repeated arches beneath the large central dome, then follow the patterned bands around the tall minarets.
Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque stands in Bandar Seri Begawan, beside a lagoon that forms part of its distinctive setting. Completed in 1958, it is named after Brunei’s twenty-eighth Sultan. Its great golden dome, marble columns and stained-glass windows bring together materials and craftsmanship from different places. A tall minaret rises beside the main hall, while much smaller cupolas mark the lower pavilions. Beyond the building, a replica sixteenth-century royal barge recalls another part of Brunei’s heritage. The mosque remains a place of worship as well as a recognisable landmark of the capital.
The Royal Regalia Museum in Bandar Seri Begawan preserves objects connected with Brunei’s monarchy and ceremonial history. Its exhibits include regalia, chariots and material from royal jubilee celebrations. Outside, the large silver-white dome makes the entrance pavilion easy to recognise. Diagonal ribs create a diamond pattern across the dome, above a narrow band of red-and-white triangles. Look for the contrast between that rounded roof and the straight grid of the glazed frontage below.
The Billionth Barrel Monument stands near the coast at Seria. Built in 1991, it commemorates a milestone in Brunei’s oil production and points to the industry’s place in the country’s modern history. The central sculpture is formed by smooth pale supports rising together into a pointed arch, with a golden emblem above. A long approach leads towards it. Look for the open space beneath the arch: the shape is as much about the gap between the supports as the structure itself.
Ulu Temburong lies in Brunei's eastern district on Borneo. Its extensive rainforest includes different forest types across changing elevations. Rivers run through this setting, connecting slopes and valleys. The park offers a particular place to understand forest diversity, with research providing evidence about its rivers, plants and animal communities.
