Alto Vista means “high view”. The present chapel was built in 1952 on a site whose first small church dated from 1750. Its bright walls, pointed windows and red-tiled roof make it easy to recognize. Outside, simple benches face the entrance beneath the open sky.
The California Lighthouse stands in the Hudishibana area near Aruba's north-western tip. It takes its name from the steamship S.S. California, which sank before the lighthouse was built. Its elevated coastal setting links a recognisable island landmark with the maritime history behind its name.
Hooiberg takes its Dutch name from a haystack. This steep hill rises about 165 metres above sea level near the island’s centre. A long stairway climbs towards the summit, where the surrounding lowlands spread into a wide panorama. Its rocky slopes support hardy dry-country plants.
